 | A Pair of Railroad Bridges Near Boiling Springs Pa | | by Ralph Brandt | | published on Sep 29, 2009 | These two bridges at one time carried enough railroad traffic that they were both needed. Today one has been removed from service, the track removed and it just sits. Worse, look at the condition of BOTH bridges. They are rusting away for lack of paint. Some day the metal will weaken enough that they will no longer carry the traffic. Why do I see this as a loose for us? Railroads carry a ton of freight 420 miles on each gallon of fuel. Trucks carry about 20 tons five miles on a gallon, or 100 miles for each ton. Rail can't do most local delivery but move the long hauls to rail and they save a quarter of the fuel. |
