 | Barnitz Mill Front View | | by Ralph Brandt | | published on Jul 14, 2008 | This view shows the front of this historic mill. To the left of the picture is the arched opening that water entered the mill – through a mill race that is now filled in – to turn the wheel which provided power, in this case to turn grindstones to grind grain, usually wheat. The outlet for the water is on the other side of the mill and is lower by about five feet. At this level of drop, one hundred ten pounds of water (approximately 14 US gals, 56 liters, two cubic feet) would have to flow under the wheel each second to produce one horsepower (550 foot pounds per second is one HP). It is unlikely this mill could produce more than two horsepower for short periods of time and with the water flow in the stream it was unlikely that it could produce more than one horsepower continuously.
