 | Barnitz Mill Race | | by Ralph Brandt | | published on Jul 14, 2008 | This view shows what is left of the race, the ‘ditch’ that carried water from the creek to the actual water wheel. This portion had a gate that could be closed to hold back the water. This ditch would have been over 80 yards long, the width the space between the two pieces of concrete, and about four feet in depth. This would have been hand dug with some assistance of plows pulled by horses. This would be less than a day’s work today with a Caterpillar Tractor but then this was probably months of work for a dozen or so men. It shows the value of energy that this much would be expended to produce a couple horsepower then, today a horsepower for a full ten hours would cost a dollar.
