 | Stone Water Outlet at Zeigler's Mill | | by Ralph Brandt | | published on Mar 30, 2009 | This stone outlet allowed the water to fall below ground level in the mill and then exit from the mill in a ditch called a tail race which emptied into the creek to the left. This additional five feet of fall gave the mill more power, probably at much as 30% more. A water wheel is big but with the limited water flow of these small streams a few horsepower was all that could be produced. If that could be increased one third simply by dropping the tail race that was a good thing. There are other central Pennsylvania mills in this collection. 39°58'58.09"N 77° 9'49.04"W. |
