to Wat Prakaeo, and adjacent to the Ministry of Defense.
The temple-like structure houses a wooden pillar places
there by King Rama I in 1782 as the foundation stone
for the new capital of Bangkok.
Erected to mark the founding of Bangkok more than two centuries ago, the wooden pillar draws a daily flock of devotees in colorful constumes who come to present offerings and perform dance rituals. The shrine is covered daily with thick smoke from burning scented joss sticks. While Thai music plays in the background. |
