Angel of the North End of Flint

by Mark Gordon Brown
published on Jun 10, 2008

This piece is about a place near where I used to live, the North End of Flint, Michigan. The area fell into a huge economical depression. I am trying to represent the hope and dispair of the people there. It is a prayer to improve their lives and the area in general.

I like it, and maybe I am wrong, but I suggest the bright colors in the background are to indicate the cities busy past, in contrast with the "thin" angel, who looks rather sad, presumably to represent the city currently.

I like the bold black outlines that you've used. It sets the subject apart from the background.

Just looking through all your pictures, I really like the way you draw figures. They remind me a lot of Clive Barker's paintings, with the thick black outlines and contrasting colours.
