Heimlich's Valve

This is an image of a Heimlich Valve. It is a device which is attached to a chest tube which is inserted into the thoracic cavity of the chest to correct a condition known as a pneumothorax - "air in the pleural space". This device is not suitable for draining blood (hemothorax) or for draining pus (pyothorax). It has the benefit of the fact that the patient can walk about with it in place assuming that the patient has adequate oxygen saturation.
