D-Day Cemetery - Theodore Roosevelt

This is a tombstone that stood out, golden letters and a Medal of Honor. Right next to it was the tomb of another Roosevelt who fought in World War 2. Related to the American president, possibly?

I mean to say "Another Roosevelt who fought in World War 1." Which is what made it a bit odd considering it was a World War 2 cemetery. That is something that lead me to suspect this soldier was related to the American president.

The two graves belong to two of President Theodore Roosevelt's four sons. Theodore Jr was assistant commander of the 4th Infantry Division and was the first Allied general officer to land on the Normandy beaches (not counting those in the Airborne divisions who parachuted further inland the night before) and died of a heart attack on the battlefield six weeks after D-Day. His younger brother Quentin Roosevelt was a World War I Army Air Service fighter pilot who was killed in action while flying with the 95th Aero Squadron in July 1918. Quentin was originally buried near his crash site, and then reinterred beside his older brother after the American Cemetery in Normandy was established. Theodore Jr.'s own son, Quentin Roosevelt II also died in a plane crash while in US government service like his uncle and namesake, as a CIA agent in 1948.

Wow, thanks a lot for that information, Lyle. I had always been a bit curious to whether or not I had actually encountered Franklin's relatives' graves. Nice to know the background information too.
