Chipmunk or Squirrel?

I personally don't know how to tell the difference, but I saw this adorable guy and wished I could have taken a closer picture, but I did not want to frighten him away. His eyes were so sweet and beautiful. He let me take a few pictures of him and didn't get scared. He just stayed there and watched me!

This is a squirrel. I feed a clan of them three times a day. They are putting me in the poor house but they are sweet little things once they get to know you.

In some places, they will come up to you and take peanuts right out of your hand if you hold them out for the squirrels and stand still. I hear they do bite at times, but it's never happened to me...

It is definitely a squirrel. We have a squirrel feeder to try to divert the chipmunk and squirrels' attention from the bird feeders. I was astounded when I saw sparrows, finches, and chickadees raiding the squirrel feeder. Turn about fair play, I guess, in the animal kingdom. A few times a bird goes into the glass jar to snitch food and then can't figure how to get out. We have to lift the big jar up and let him fly out that way. To answer your question: Look for stripes along the back of the animal. If there are black or dark brown stripes, the animal is a chipmunk, not a squirrel. Also the chipmunk's tail is shorter and less bushy.

Dear Sandra,

Thank you so kindly for your comment! Now, I know the difference between the two. I did not know how to tell. And, thank you for sharing with me about the birds that come to visit your feeder. It sounds like a wonderful way spend your time - - just watching nature's most beautiful treasures.

My best wishes & blessings, always.

Sincerely,

-Liane Schmidt.
