Beautiful Predator

by Darlene McFarlane
published on Sep 24, 2008

After hearing a commotion in the back yard I looked out to see this hawk perched on the old shed. Cries were coming from beneath the shed roof where a colony of chipmunks were frantic with fright. I went out and chased him away but not before he took a menacing swoop at my head.

Thanks everyone for your comments.

I took the broom from the back porch with me when I went to chase him off. I was still about 25 feet from him when he turned and headed for me talons first. I would never want to hurt an animal but I knew if I didn't defend myself I could be seriously hurt.

It all ended well anyway.

I wish that I had have been there on this day. It would have scared me but I am fascinated with Hawks and would have loved to see it....maybe.. Great shot!

He is indeed a magnificent creature.

lanne, you are welcomed to come over any time to Hawk watch.

Cheryl F, thank you.

nobert, thank you for your comment and for your many enlightening articles. I have learned a lot from you.

Valli, thank you. I have seen him hovering in the area before but never got close enough to take a picture. We have a Golden Eagle living close by , I hope I am fortunate enough to get a shot of him one day.

Jessica Rowe, all chipmunks were safe but they kept up their calls for about 90 minutes after the Hawk left.

A fascinating picture Darlene. I think you made a typo with the heading, 'Predator.'

You find the most interesting things to photograph. This one is especialy nice. you must have many animals and birds in your area. Lucky you.

Hi, Anne. Thanks for pointing out my spelling error. I will put a fix in right away.

Ruby, the squirrel was found by my grandson at his work. A car came in for repair and the nest was under the hood. The babies were less than a week old and this one is the only one who survived. My daughter lanne is his foster mom.

We do have many birds and small wildlife here. We live in a small farming community with a 90 acre farmer's field behind our house. There is a small pond too where I have seen a Golden Eagle and Heron. One day I hope to see them when I have my camera handy.
