Another unusual shot. It is generally difficult to get so close to this illusive bird.

Thank you Lucien, Anne, and Valli for your comments.
Anne, not long after I got to the bank he flew in low over my head and into the water. The shore line here is thick with vegetation and it took about 15 minutes before I found him. I came out of the bush and there he was right below me. He walked to the rock (the other photo) and stood there watching me. I took about 7 shots before he took flight. I thought I lost him until I walked upstream. That's when I saw him in the tree. He seemed to feel more secure up off the ground because I took another 4 or 5 shots and caused a lot of noise and movement while he scrutinized me. I stood there watching him for another 5-10 minutes and he was still in the tree when I left.

Hi Dave,
I have always had a problem getting close for a good shot too so I was very excited when this one stayed around.

you must of really been pretty still, we have them here, and they just fly away when they see you... such a great shot too, how graceful it looks for such a large bird on the tip of a tree top...

This picture is awe-inspiring; it looks like a tribute to the wonderful creations of God; a symbol of birth, of life.

We do see some herons ocassionaly at the river's and creek's but they are always standing in the shallow water on one foot.I had never seen one on top of a tree. Very nice photography.
