 | Antique Hand Water Pump | | by Ralph Brandt | | published on Oct 18, 2008 | This pump is in front of a farm house near York PA. The barn and the house included in other pictures in this collection. Pumping water with one of these was not a trivial task. Each down stroke of the pump lifted a three eights inch iron rod and a column of water over an inch in diameter that went to the bottom of the well. That water and the rod could weigh well over a hundred pounds and lifting it a foot got about a quart of water. Then it was let back down for the next stroke. It took ten strokes on the handle for a bucket of water.
