 | Streedagh Beach at Sunset | | by Jane Gilgun | | published on Jul 22, 2009 | Streedagh Beach is located in County Sligo, Ireland. Horses and riders gallop daily down the miles-long beach. People walk, swim, and lie in the sun. Streedagh is the site of the wreck of the Spanish Armada, when Spain allied with the Irish to resist British rule. The wreck could not be at a more beautiful place. Many of the Spanish sailors survived, although the resistance failed. The Spanish men stayed in Ireland and raised families. The so-called "black Irish" are descendants of the survivors of the wreck. |
