Claude Monet's Famous Wheatstacks

by Liane Schmidt
published on Feb 10, 2009

Taken at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. Claude Monet (impressionist) painted the Wheatstacks in the fall of 1890. He painted them about thirty times at various times throughout the season. In his words, "For me a landscape hardly exists at all as a landscape, because its appearance is constantly changing; but it lives by virtue of its surroundings, the air and the light which vary continually".

Thanks for sharing the pic and the background details. It always impressed me how there could be so much hard work behind a piece of art.

Very good, as usual. It's nice to see a good use for this picable site. I am sick of the normal pics that come through here. You, as always, make the best of all that you do.

This picture brings back memories. I used to teach my school children all about Claude Monet during art lessons and many of them painted their own versions of his pictures, including the haystacks.

Not one of his better paintings, but real life is often a little dull, though exists regardless.

I love Monet a lot. I saw many of his paintings for the first time at a French Impressionism exhibition at the Art Institute in Chicago back in 1983. He is one of my favorite artists.
