Charters Towers Home, Circa 1875

by Adrian Michael
published on Nov 6, 2007

This uniquely Queensland home (The Queenslander) built in Charters Towers around 1875 is designed with special purposes in mind. The exposed wall timbers are essential to detect termite damage before it is too late, as is the elevated house. Also the shady area underneath the home allows for even the slightest breeze to provide cooling during the extremes of the Australian summer, though it had the same effect during winter, when it was not so welcome. Charters Towers is located about 135 km south-west of Townsville in North Queensland.
