"The Dunny", Australian Style

by Adrian Michael
published on Nov 6, 2007

No running water, no toilet flushing, this Australian dunny is located at Charters Towers, an old gold ming town 135 km south-west of Townsville in Queensland. It is fully equipped with great spider webs and is home to several large Red-Back Spiders, whose bites can be very painful and can make even an adult quite ill. Dunnies used to be quite common in Australia, and I can remember my father building ours.

Ah, this does bring back memories. Night time trips with a candle or a torch were the most fearful! I have lived just about all over Far North Queensland - Atherton,Yungaburra,Caban,Tinaroo(when the dam was being built),Walkamin,Ravenshoe,Tolga, and now live in Cairns.
Thanks for the memories.

P.S., Had a sister-in-law that used to live in Charters Towers. Visted there when they were filming 'The Irishman'.
