Heliconia (alexandra Hospital, Singapore)

The heliconia is a popular choice for modern tropical gardens because of its dramatic colour(s), and the sculptural shape of its flowers. The heliconia is also known as lobster-claw, wild plantain and false bird-of-paradise.

What else can you expect in Singapore where we queue for everything? :) These mushroomed up in compost laid out for new flowerbeds beside a road in Singapore. They reminded me of how I've always loved mushrooms growing wild in unexpected places. These can only be seen in the early dawn hours, they "wilt" as the sun comes up.
