Panama Canal "Mules" Change Tracks

Three Panama Canal "Mules", locomotives built by Japan's Mitsubishi Corporation for approximately $2 million each await a ride on the canal railroad's turntable after assisting the Princess Cruise Lines "Coral Princess" through the Gatun Locks on the Atlantic Side of the canal. Thanks to the limited real estate on the canal, turntables are utilized to switch locomotives between tracks. Contrary to popular belief, the "Mules" are utilized to keep ships in line during transit and not to tow the ships, which travel through the lock system under their own power.
