 | Wooden Barn in York Springs Pa | This place has character. It is next to the old Pittneturf Funeral home. The building is showing signs of deterioration but it is an example of a PA wooden barn. The vents were at the top to make a chimney to pull out heat. Hay stored in one end of the barn needed to be ventilated to prevent fires. The slats on the end to the left was a corn crib where unshelled corn was stored to dry. The opening between the corncrib and the barn was a wagon shed. |
|  | Wooden Pennsylvania Barn Near Mt. Holly Springs | Many of the very old barns in the area are stone but the ones built about seventy five to a hundred years ago are wood. This is a beautiful example of one of those wooden barns. It is located near Mt. Holly Springs. These were two story buildings with the cattle on the ground floor and the hay and straw on the second. When these barns were built (before bailing) hay and straw was stored loose and took lots of space. Usually hay was on one side of the doors, straw on the other. The angled ramp to get the wagons into the barn is called a barn bridge. Note the small foot access door to the left of the main doors that were opened to push in loaded wagons. An overhead pulley with a vicious claw was used to pick the hay off the wagon and store it. |

|  | Light Beyond the Wires Calling | This is what it looks like out my back window every winter morning. This picture was taken in February 2009. |

|  | This is my Breakfast, Leave Me Alone | Here we have some of my hair sheep ewes having a fine breakfast of hay and oats. You can see some of their lambs jump right into the feeder. Moments after taking the picture my wife called because another ewe had just delivered twins and she (my wife) needed help with getting them into a stall and warmed up. It was a cold morning. |
