|  | Maryland: Pennsylvania Line 1632 | This point in Washington Boro Lancaster marks the 40th parallel, the Maryland Pennsylvania line as it was in 1632. Penn was given a charter that it was at 39 degrees 43 minutes, about 20 miles south of that line in 1681. Eighty years, lawsuits in British Courts and a survey by the famous Mason and Dixon it was set where it is today, at 39 43. With it at 40 the cities of York and Philadelphia would be in Maryland. A good marker for anyone wanting to see where the line would be is Dover PA, the southern boro line is within a few yards of the 40th parallel. |
